Moving Abroad: 10 things you may gain

Most people live and die very close to the place they are born. You could be on your way to living an extraordinary life by choosing to relocate to another country.

1. You broaden your horizons

Like traveling, relocating to a foreign country will open up your mind. It will be even more so if you’re living with the locals and rather than within an expat neighborhood.

2. You become bilingual (or multilingual)

Knowing more than one language or adding one more to the list gives you access to other cultures and opens up more opportunities. You will learn and unlearn at the same time, and know yourself better while being more aware of your own cultural identity.

3. You become fearless

Charting your own territory in a foreign country helps you to conquer your fears about the world being an unsafe place. Many times, courage means making the most difficult first plunge and from then on you learn to improvise and deal with the unexpected.

4. You become a fusion cook

I didn’t really cook for myself until moving out of my parents’ house and straight to the other side of the world. After a couple of years in the new country, I became able to prepare local dishes and concocted new ones which had begotten compliments from local friends.

5. You learn what is really essential

Being stripped off all familiarity and certain creature comforts at home taught me that I could actually survive without them. At the same time, I was able to identify what really matters in life and only have little belongings. Now, my most prized possessions are my German hand-made violin (a gift from my late father) and piano.

6. Freedom and independence

If you’re a young adult like me, there’s nothing like moving away thousands of miles from where you were raised that will make you grow up and be independent.

7. You become more resourceful

No longer being able to rely on someone close to save your ass makes you more alert and able to spot opportunities to better your life. You also learn how to navigate better in a new place, overall sharpening your senses.

8. You make new friends (and family)

In my experience, locals are often helpful and welcoming to foreigners, especially if you’re alone. It’s quite heart-warming to encounter people in another part of the world who would eventually treat you like family.

9. You may fall in love

Maybe all those early failures in your love relationships are due to this: your match is actually found on the other side of the continent. And the good news is, you’re now on the other side. Alternatively, you could very well fall in love with the new country, finding a home away from home.

10. Life becomes an adventure

When you’re living on unfamiliar territory, even an errand trip to the next town will seem like an adventure to you, for a while. If you love to travel, the new country is a completely uncharted territory, with so much to be discovered.
